Reunion Island Tourist Promotion Bureau
Welcome to Reunion island, a wildly tropical Island with spectacular scenery, located in the Indian Ocean East of Madagascar. Often referred to as the world’s most secret tropical paradise, it is simply one of the most intriguing spots on earth.
La Reunion is located is located 130 km south west of the coast of Mauritius. Of volcanic origin the island has an active volcano, La Fournaise and 3 volcanic calderas : Cirque de Salazie, Cirque de Cilaos and Cirque de Mafate with have varied landscape with canyons. The Cirque de Mafate is accessible only by foot or helicopter. Most often referred to as natural amphitheaters, these cirques – Salazie, Cilaos, and Mafate – are all a bit different, each attracting travellers that are looking for a true adventure. Some come here for the incredible canyoning excursions. Others want to hike the hundreds of kilometers of trails that traverse the cirques. Some spend their holiday in Reunion mountain biking while others choose a more relaxing trek with stops along the way to explore the cirque’s enticing mountain villages.
La Reunion is a land of contrast for lovers of beautiful sceneries and mountain climbers as well as for lovers of sandy beach, sea, sun and surfing.
The island is 39 miles (63 kilometers) long; 28 miles (45 kilometers) wide; and covers 970 square miles (2512 square kilometres). It is similar to the island Hawaii insofar as both are located above hotspots in the Earth's crust. Piton de la Fournaise, a shield volcano on the eastern end of Réunion Island, rises more than 8565 feet (2611 meters) above sea level, has erupted more than 100 times since 1640 and is under constant monitoring. La Fournaise is created by a hot spot volcano, which also created the Piton des Neiges and the islands of Mauritius and Rodrigues. Piton des Neiges volcano, the highest point on the island at 10069 feet (3070 meters) above sea level, is northwest of Piton de la Fournaise volcano. Collapsed calderas and canyons are southwest of the mountain. Piton des Neiges is now extinct. Despite its name, snow practically never falls on the summit. The slopes of both volcanoes are heavily forested. Cultivated land and cities like the capital city of Saint-Denis are concentrated on the surrounding coastal lowlands.
Climate:
The temperature on the coastal areas varies between 22°C in winter and 34°C in summer. The sea temperature varies between 22°C and 27°C.
If you’re hoping that part of your trip to Reunion will include time spent on the beach, you’ll no doubt want to head for St Gilles les Bain, the island’s premiere sunbathing destination.
This beach attracts both visitors and locals, much thanks to its 20 kilometer stretch of lagoon and its beautiful golden sand, a rarity on an island where most of the sand is of the black volcanic variety. On weekends and holidays, you’ll want to plan ahead and arrive at the beach early if you’re not staying at one of St Gilles les Bain’s resort hotels. When the weather is fine, the beach is crowded as are the beach bars and local restaurants. Still, the trip to St Gilles les Bain is well worth the traffic you need to fight to get there, as it demonstrates a different and more tropical side of the island, far removed from the rugged volcanic mountains.
Diving and other water activities like snorkeling or swimming are also concentrated around the area of St Gilles les Bain and its coral reefs, and the region is ideal for deep-sea fishing, with charter fishing boats departing from the marina on a regular basis.
